Roving Rube

July 22, 2003

Fifth Avenue Hotel, 24 Fifth Avenue

1922, Emery Roth; New York City Landmark.
Brick with glazed, colored terra-cotta ornament. Hotel converted to apartments.
(Source: "Terra-Cotta Skyline", by Susan Tunick).

Terra-cotta angels (detail, 2-jpg) bring relief to this strict grid of window and brick.

Otherwise, this building (in context) follows the "1, 3, top" rule of ornamentation -- the bottom of 1-jpg is the third floor, marked by a belt courses and windows with extra trimmings (detail). Then you skip up to the top (3-jpg) for another helping of detail.
