Roving Rube

Little Singer Building, 561-63 Broadway

1902-4, Ernest Flag; New York City Landmark.
Terra-cotta units set within a framework of steel. Industrial converted to commercial and residential.
(Source: "Terra-Cotta Skyline", by Susan Tunick).

Red terra cotta blocks and castings are used to accent this very early example of a "steel and glass" facade (2-jpg).

The Scholastic Books headquarters at left echos the terra cotta with similar blocks used in the bottom "crossbeam" to spell "Scholastic" (2-jpg).
