Notes (Roving Rube): This is part of the base of the Hearst Magazine skyscraper, completed in 1927 ... and still awaiting the skyscraper part. It's nonetheless so outstanding a building that it has been accorded landmark status. The Rube especially likes the uniquely rich yellow-beige tone of the stone.
Incredibly (to the Rube at least), the Hearst Corporation still owns the building, and they've gotten the ball rolling again with plans for a 36-story tower, with construction set to begin in 2003.
A wait-and-see attitude is advisable.
