The office buildings were evacuated in midtown after the second plane hit, and people realized it was terrorists and not an accident.

The tower visible from 5th Avenue -- it came out overexposed in this shot -- had a shocking amount of smoke pouring from it.

I started walking south to take more pictures and someone said, "the other one is already gone." I thought, that's how these rumors get started, because you can't see the other tower from this angle, and so someone is going to say it's gone.

I walked under some scaffolding and then there were suddenly cries and gestures from the crowd. When I came out there was just empty space where the tower had been. I didn't feel like taking any more pictures. (ML)
