Photo Credit: Roving Rube. Viewpoint: 47th St. between 5th and 6th Ave., looking north; 1/8/02 2:27 PM.
Notes (Roving Rube): The Rube picked this picture because he thought he had a good title to go with it, "I saw the number 5 in red", after the famous Charles Demuth painting. Only it turns out the painting is called "I saw the figure 5 in gold". And the number in the Rube's pictures isn't gold. But then he said, oh, well.
Manhattan's "Diamond District", 47th St. between 5th and 6th, is one of the most bustling blocks in the city. "Bustling" because people really move around like they have important business, instead of shuffling along like tourists.
It has a great collection of signage on the themes of diamonds, jewelry, and gold, and the Rube had intended to make some all-encompassing collages of it, until he realized that making a collage look good was about 100 times as hard as making 1 picture look good. So under
and are found just two fragments of the great mosaic of 47th St.
