Notes (Roving Rube): These figures are in the entranceway (In Context) to St. Thomas Church -- we see the hand of Jesus and three apostles, each holding an item symbolizing who they are (since it is not known what they actually looked like).
"This is where the Easter Parade began. Over one hundred years ago, St. Thomas's services ended with a choir procession to St. Luke's Hospital, then one block north, bringing the flowers from the sanctuary and then presenting a concert for the patients. Members of the congregation and passersby joined." (The Spiritual Traveler: New York City, by Edward F. Bergman)
The
shows the church contrasted against the neighboring "666 5th" skyscraper, which in the Rube's opinion makes a more pleasing picture then the Alternate View, where we see it against its other skyscraper neighbor. In this one, the architect "politely clad his tower in limestone and added vertical fins to make it look like a campanile for St. Thomas." (ibid.)The styles of the two buildings still seem greatly at odds, and from this angle it's like putting a beige matte around a beige picture. The Rube would have opted for contrast instead.
