This picture reminds the Rube how much he just likes looking at the lights -- not thinking of anything in particular, just looking at them. When you are in a unfamiliar neighborhood and it is cold and there are cars or people going by, it is hard to concentrate on the lights. You can do it when they're in a picture like this, or when when you are home looking at the Christmas tree in your living room, and everyone else has gone to bed ...

He also particularly liked a lit rhododendron (Fig. 1) and decided it was because the lights echo the flower buds.
