This tree is a large (for these parts) magnolia, and its twiggy branching and dense budding (seen more clearly in the daylight shot, Fig. 2, and in Zoom) compliments this thick wrapping of lights.

The Rube learned on his tour that some landscape companies have a side business of stringing Christmas lights in the winter, and it would seem like having a cherry picker or a bunch of guys with ladders would be easier then trying to do something like this by shinnying up the tree ... After the season is over, in midtown Manhattan at least, the contractors simply cut the light strings to ribbons and rake up the pieces, as that is apparently cheaper then untangling them and trying to locate the burned out bulbs.
