In years past, as the Rube remembers it, the New York Public Library would have a flock of topiary reindeer, and wrapped presents, filling up Bryant Park. The past two years have seen them replaced by a nice tree (see 2001's tree).

The library closes in the early evening, but since it gets dark so early this time of year, its lights are still on and one can get a view of the fresco on the ceiling of the Main Reading Room though the arched windows (Fig. 3).
