Although the ancients had strict rules about what columns should look like, New York buildings are noted for their exuberant mixing of styles and add-ins. An example might be what writer Frances Morrone describes as those banded limestone 'marshmallow' columns that I have always regarded as one of the truly tasteless architectural developments of all time. The marshmallows remind the Rube of the old wooden Tinkertoy sprockets.
